“Anyone can get dressed up and glamorous, but it is how people dress in their days off that are the most intriguing.”—Alexander Wang
My favorite season for fashion is fall; a time for boots, jeans, and scarves. Leather and plaid are really making a comeback this year, so of course my go-to outfit of the season incorporates both, while also pulling a couple fall classics. Living in the south the start of fall is all about layers because as it begins to cool down the temperatures fluctuate drastically going as low as 50 but up to the 80's. The look I find myself reaching for is simple, yet touches the top trends of the year.
I start off with a plain v-neck or tank top (typically white) and layer that with a long plaid shirt. I rock a large Tommy Hilfiger button up flannel that I took from a guy friend a couple years back. I specified long because I like to wear leggings with this outfit, but skinny jeans do the trick when I wear one of my own plaid shirts that reach only to my waistline. Military inspired boots and coat finish off this grudge look for me. I bought (splurged) on a military style jacket from Off Saks, it has leather sleeves of course! Combat boots are always a fall go-to for me, but almost any boot would finish this look perfectly.
Here are a few examples of what other shoes you can't go wrong with when you don't have combat boots. When going for something girlier, I pair a bright, feminine plaid button down with my Minnetonka Calf Hi 3-layer fringe boots (89.95), another fabulous fall go-to shoe. My worn in converse are always an easy slip on, I'll cuff my skinny jeans a couple inches or wear boyfriend jeans (with a fitted plaid shirt to avoid wearing all baggy clothes!!). On a rainy day, this look is awesome with some rain boots. I have a pair of original tall graphite Hunter rain boots ($140) I scored for my birthday last year and I'm obsessed with them, but they're a bit pricey.. rain boots are super easy to find cheaper if you do a little digging.
You'll generally find me wearing this outfit with minimum (gold) jewelry: studded earrings and a simple chain necklace. Also, minimum makeup because I'll probably throw my glasses on anyway. Maybe accessorize with a light scarf depending on the time of day. This look, to me, is a quick grab for a last minute lunch date or running some errands.
The pieces are very interchangeable, so I foresee myself following these guidelines as a go-to all fall. I suggest trading the flannel out for a cardigan or oversized sweater, or ditching the pants and rocking a high waisted leather skirt with your plaid tucked in for a night look (go ahead and finish with a smokey eye).
Tip: If you're looking for an oversized, cozy flannel and have no generous males around, hit your local thrift store!
Every article of clothing I've offered includes something pricey, something relatively inexpensive, and something for a damn good price.
